Vehicles are equipped with headlights, taillights and windshield wipers to assist an automobile's driver in observing the roadway in front. Car headlights project a light beam forward of a vehicle to illuminate the roadway for a driver. Mercedes Benz Headlights, for example, are activated in dusk or night hours to illuminate the road directly ahead of a car. A typical Mercedes Benz Headlight is composed of a reflector and a lamp projecting through an opening into the interior of the reflector. The lamp's base is located in a holder of the reflector, so that the discharge vessel is arranged in an exactly defined location. The reflector surface is then illuminated by the emitted light. As a result, a headlight beam is formed and, depending on the shape of the reflector surface, radiated in a forward direction.
Despite its obvious importance, headlights were never included on the first cars produced. In fact, they never existed until they were compellingly created for obvious reasons. By 1885, "headlamps" were installed on cars and was initially powered by acetylene gas. Use of electric-powered headlights did not start until 30 years later. The most common types of headlights now since the 1980's are the halogen headlamps and recently, the so-called high intensity discharge (HID) Lamps. As noted, car headlights typically employ filament-based light sources such as halogen lamps or HID lamps that produce electric arc illumination by electrical discharge between electrodes in a high-pressure gas ambient. Halogen lamps had been widely used in an older conventional Mercedes Benz Headlight. The halogen lamp is provided with two filaments, that is, a filament for irradiating a high-beam and a filament for irradiating a low-beam, so a high-beam mode or a low-beam mode may be selectively operated as desired.
Most luxury cars today however, namely the Mercedes Benz, BMW, and Porsche, equip their vehicles with HID lamps. The modern Mercedes Benz Headlight, made out of HID lamps, covers the mercury vapor, metal halide, high-pressure sodium and xenon short-arc Type lamps. Most distinguishable about HID Mercedes Headlights are their color, which are blue-white as opposed to the halogen lamps. HID headlight systems generally utilize 35-watt lamps. This means that 35 watts of electric current must be delivered constantly. A dose of this electric current requires a ballast that helps in regulating the voltage and current going to the headlamps. Since HID headlamps emit light equivalent to what would be seen at several thousand Kelvin, a considerable amount of time is needed to build up enough pressure to reach its brightest intensity. The warm-up time usually lasts for several minutes with an ignition voltage of around 20 kilovolts. This is very impractical if used as a headlamp. This problem was solved by having constant power being delivered to the HID lamps, which would result in about only two seconds warm-up time to reach Over a third of its full intensity. After the warm-up, only a small amount voltage is needed to keep them running.

So, you’ve been toying with the idea and now you want to take the plunge and start your own portrait studio. You might have been thinking that it is something that is out of your reach. “I can’t afford the overhead on a studio or lighting equipment is too expensive.” Well, Good news, fabulous photographs are possible to create from your home and you may not need as much equipment as you think you do.
A studio can easily be set up in your home or other small space. The first thing to remember when you are setting up your studio space is KEEP IT SIMPLE. When you are in a photo session you want to be able to have your mind on the customer 90% of the time rather than fussing with your equipment.
Let’s start with the camera. There are so many options when it comes to cameras. I would recommend deciding what your budget is and then read reviews by other photographers to chose the best one for you. Really, you don’t need the best or top of the line camera to do the job. There are plenty of cameras that are plenty sufficient and will do the job you need, without burning a hole in your pocket.
Really when it comes to a camera your money should really be put into the lens. Your camera is only as good as the lens that you attach to it. Again, I would recommend reading reviews on the Lenses that you are looking at. There are many forums and websites that list reviews on photography equipment. Some that have been found to be very helpful are fredmiranda.com, dpreview.com, the-digital-picture.com (this website reviews are specifically for canon cameras and lenses).
When you are buying a lens the length is a very important criteria for portrait photographers. You want to be sure to have a lens that will flatter your subject. As a General rule for head and shoulder portraits the length of your lens should be double the diagonal of the film plane or in the case these days the digital sensor. For example, the diagonal measurement of a full size senor is 45mm therefore your lens should be 90mm or even longer for flattering portraits. You would probably also want a wider lens for full length or group portraits. However, if you are on a tight budget you could probably get away with buying one lens that will fit all your immediate needs. Something around the range of 28-135mm or there about, which will give you the Wide Angle for larger groups and also the telephoto for close-ups on individuals.
When buying any lens be sure to purchase at least a UV Filter to protect the lens. There are all kinds of filters that each serves different purposes. If on a budget, other than the UV filter you don’t necessarily need any filters. You may possibly want a soft focus filter, as they are flattering in portraiture, however, you can add the effect afterwards in Photoshop if you don’t have the filter.
Next we come to the actual studio set up. You will need at least 2 lights: a main light and a Background Light. It is best to use a soft box on the main light, as it will create a much softer light than an umbrella. A background light or a Hair Light is needed to create separation between the background and the subject. Otherwise you photograph will look flat. If you can afford it having a background and a hair light is optimal, and then adding another light as a fill light would be nice to fill in some shadows, however, a reflector will do the job. You can purchase a reflector or you can make your own using a large piece of Styrofoam or white cardboard. You don’t have to spend a fortune on lights either. You can find lighting kits reasonably priced at many photography supply stores.
In addition to lights you will also need some posing stools, or at least something that you can sit your clients on for their portraits, a light meter, and backgrounds with a stand or other means of hanging it. There are all kinds of props out there, but none are immediately necessary if you are limited. They can be acquired Over time. Since proper exposure is an obvious must for good portraits you will need to purchase a light meter. There are all kinds of light meters out there and they can get pretty expensive. For studio portraits you will just need an incident meter (which measure the light that is falling on the subject. This will run you any where from $150-$800.
Next, we come to backgrounds. This is an important piece to every portrait. The background is what sets the stage and helps create the overall feeling of each portrait. One quick tip to choosing a backdrop during a session is to choose a backdrop that is similar to the clothing of your client. This way the clothing will blend with the backdrop and the focal point will be your clients face, rather than their sweater or the backdrop. The backdrop is there to enhance your subject, not to distract from it.
There are many different kinds of backdrops e.g. Dyed, painted, computer printed, on paper, muslin, duck, and canvas. The most economic is probably paper. However, you are very limited by paper and you have to replace it often. Dyed muslin is a Great way to go when you are just starting up your studio. It is affordable, durable, portable, easily stored, and even washable. If you have the funds it is definitely worth having a few hand painted backdrops in your collection. Hand painted backgrounds on both muslin and canvas tend to have more dimension and are quite beautiful. However, they are more expensive and usually are not washable. To determine what backdrop is best for you, ask your self a few questions first. What kind of portraits will you be taking? If you photograph children more often you may want to lean towards dyed backdrops because they are washable. If you are photographing formal portraits, such as business headshots or bridals, you may want to go with hand painted for a richer look. Will you be traveling with your backdrops? The dyed travel well and also photograph well even if they are a little wrinkly. However, if you have a truck you can travel with the painted backdrops rolled.
Some basic backdrop that every studio should have: black, white for High Key portraits, blue for general use, a deep brown is always good to have for formal portraits, such as a business head shot, and possibly a pastel for children and bridals. Once again, you don’t have to buy a ton all at once. Just have a Solid base selection and your collection will grow over time.
Please note that there is no such thing as a bad background, just different ones for different purposes.You will also need a background stand or some kind of system for hanging your backdrop. The most versatile choice is probably to get your self a portable background stand. They very inexpensive, are easy to set up, easy to travel with if need be, and are compact when stored if you have a temporary studio space. You could also purchase a roller system or a hanger system. It really all depends on the space and budget that you have.
In addition to your studio space you will also want a place for dealing with customers. This could be a home office or even your kitchen Table.
Remember, keep it simple and take plenty of time to practice and get comfortable with your equipment and working space so that each client session can go as smoothly as possible.

Stock Photos: Creating a Conceptual Image for Use in Advertising
Teamwork, Cartoons and Conflict
The idea came to me when I was thinking about creating a teamwork image. Teamwork is a concept that is always in demand. I have this exercise I do from time-to-time when thinking up stock ideas. I think of the opposite of what I am trying to achieve. So, when no teamwork ideas were coming up I switched to the opposite; conflict. The first thing that came to mind was a group of business people fighting. As I pondered that visual the classic comic strip, Dagwood, came to mind. When Dagwood would get into a fight the visual would be a cloud of dust with arms and legs and so forth sticking out. There was my idea! A stock picture of a dust cloud with arms, legs and faces protruding out of it could be used to illustrate topics such as business negotiations, conflict, and, yes, even teamwork (by showing the lack of)! As an added bonus, the image is inherently humorous and funny pictures tend to sell very well.
Models, Fists and Grimacing
To create the image I photographed several models making fists, grimacing, sticking their feet out and so forth. Next I needed a dust cloud. When I decided to shoot the dust cloud I was alone at my studio. What could I use to create that cloud? I looked around my shelves for inspiration, and found a compact of face powder that some model must have left at some point. That would work! I laid down a 4x5 sheet of white foamcore. I placed the compact with the powder in it down on the foam core.
I used a Profoto 7b power pack with two Heads to light the set up. I used one head in a light bank that I placed on the floor next to the foam core. The other head was on a boom and already had a beauty dish on it left Over from the model shoot. I aimed the beauty dish at the set.
As this whole endeavor was a spur-of-the-moment one, I had no assistant. So I grabbed my camera (Canon 1ds MKIII with a 16 to 35mm zoom lens) in one hand and a can of compressed air in the other. While looking through the camera I simultaneously fired the camera while shooting off a blast of air into the face powder. Hey, it kind of worked! I did it again. And again. Then I had to get up and leave the room so I could breathe!
By then the compact was empty of powder, so I scooped up the residue and put it back in the compact and shot several more times. I probably shot a total of about a dozen shots. By then the whole studio was a mess. My camera and lens was flesh colored. My studio floor was flesh colored. My eyes were stinging and I was starting to sneeze regularly. But I got what I needed.
Clipping paths and layer masks
Then it was simply a matter of using a clipping path to select the arms, legs and heads of the models and stripping them into the dust cloud (actually a combination of three different exposures). After stripping a given arm or leg into the cloud image I used layer masks to fade the part into the dust. While playing with the sizing and positioning of the parts I realized that the image was looking a lot like a suicide bombing…not Good! By eliminating the heads of the models the image got back to looking like a good old cartoon fight.
The final step was a background. I needed something that would say “Business” but was still clean and simple. I tried an exterior wall with the “conflict” happening on a sidewalk…but it just wasn’t looking right to me. I went into my archives of backgrounds to see if I had something better. I spotted a stainless steel elevator that I had shot in the airport in Buenos Aires. I duplicated the single elevator to create an image that would work as a horizontal image. I dropped that behind the dust cloud fight and voila!
A successful stock photo
The first three people who saw the image all laughed out loud…a good indication that the image would be a successful stock photo. I submitted it to Blend Images for consideration as a Rights Managed image…and they liked and accepted it. The final steps in the process included using an ftp site to upload the image, the metadata, and the model releases (yes…I needed releases for each model). Now, in about six months I will know if I have a successful concept stock photo!

I do portraits mostly, senior photos are my specialty. But I am assigned to doing some engagement photos. What kind of lighting is most appropriate for this? I was thinking a 24x36 monolight w/softbox and an umbrella. What do you recommend?
That sounds about right to me, but you also need to consider your other lighting sources. A single light source probably wouldn't give you an attractive result. I'm not sure I understand your question because a professional portrait photographer would usually have the right gear for this already.
Not knowing what you have already, and why it is not sufficient is making it a bit tricky to answer. I do think you're on the right track with your suggested gear though. For me, personally, I would be looking into a secondary light source for rear lighting too.
